New Orleans, Louisiana – The Morris Bart law firm has announced the filing of a lawsuit on behalf of seven victims impacted by the tragic New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans. The planned assault, which involved a vehicle striking celebrants and subsequent gunfire, left the city in mourning and sparked questions about the preventability of such an event.

The lawsuit, filed against two contractors hired by the city of New Orleans and the city itself, highlights a failure to implement adequate safety measures despite prior warnings and detailed reports outlining the risks. One report, published before the attack, categorized just such an incident as “highly possible while moderately probable” and offered actionable solutions to mitigate the threat. At the time of the attack, it was clear that no temporary safety measures were in place for the interim, where more permanent measures were under maintenance, leaving a significant exposure to threat for those in the area.

According to the Morris Bart legal team, these safety measures were insufficiently implemented, leading to the devastating events that unfolded on January 1st.

Attorney Matthew Hemmer, the Morris Bart attorney representing the victims, stated: “Our City, its residents, and visitors have the right to rely on experts we hire—and pay—to design and construct safety systems to prevent this from happening.  I am disappointed that our investigation led us to conclude that those experts let us down, here.”

The lawsuit seeks to address the failures of the contractors and the city while also emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure planning and public safety measures in the future.

The attack, which was brought to an end by the swift response of the New Orleans Police Department, has left a lasting impact on the city and its residents. This legal action serves as an effort to bring accountability and justice to those affected by the tragedy.

The Morris Bart law firm continues to investigate the events leading up to the attack and the circumstances surrounding the defendants’ planning and implementation of safety measures.
